Business and Functional Requirements
Detailed definition of business and functional requirements are critical to the success of all technology re-engineering projects. These form a core building block to identifying the right technology solution to meet business needs, whether this ultimate solution might be a bespoke build, vendor package or mixture of the two.
Depending upon project, the scope of the requirements gathering typically includes:
- Risk calculations and methodologies
- Overall functional requirements
- Interface and integration requirements
- Data management, validation and sourcing
- Workflow processes
- User interface and overall usability requirements
- Reporting
- Performance and timeliness of processing
We then transform the detailed business and functional requirements into a Functional Component Model (FCM). The Functional Component model transforms the business requirements into a logical functional representation of the target solution, and represents the basis for subsequent detailed technology decisions.
In the subsequent Solution Definition phase, technology solution components are mapped to the Functional Component Model to ensure full technology coverage of the functional requirements and allow for appropriate combinations of multiple vendor technologies and bespoke build components to meet different aspects of the business and functional requirements. The Functional Component Model also serves to provide full traceability through the implementation phase by providing a link between the business and functional requirements and the defined solution.
